MI.GA PROJECT
INSTITUTIONAL AGREEMENT OF PROGRAM- FRAMEWORK PROGRAM AGREEMENT- SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND INNOVATION IN CALABRIA REGION
Wine-making culture has age-old roots in Cirò area: in ancient times, between Sibari and Crotone, they used to produce a famous wine named Krimisia, given as award for the Olympiads winners. From here the name ‘Cremissa’ comes (ancient village where it was cultivated). Today, Cirò is the land of choice for Gaglioppo, basic variety for the production of Cirò D.O.C. red and rosé wines. Cirò terroir is particularly arid and harsh and provides the best condition for Gaglioppo. As a result, it gives a high-alcohol content and full-bodied wine. Cirò has recently upgraded due to: (i) new techniques for working on vineyards and vinification; (ii) the must at controlled temperature, which helps for the decrease of the alcohol content and for stopping the oxidation. As result, you get more well-rounded wines, rich of fruity notes and fresh bouquet than the past.
Through scientific research and winemaker’s passion, Cirò wine heritage has become a powerful tool for arousing the consumers’ interest. The main project will end in December 2013 and aims to the study of different “vineyard-winery” systems for strengthening the hidden potential of the wine-making in the Cirò area.
